Macrocosmica - Art of the Black Earth
13-27 Mar 2003 reviewed by James Smart

Macrocosmica's gigs are an exhilarating mix of dark banter, vicious guitar sounds and general weirdness, and while this long player inevitably lacks some of the chat that adorns their live performances, it's still an idiosyncratic and compelling beast.
'Lunarian' starts with a vicious shriek before slipping into a frightening hacksaw groove, while 'Bunuel' has a low key and rather lovely opening that is quickly shattered by a metal stomp. The band starts ex-Teenage Fannie Brendan O'Hare, although the Pixies are a more obvious reference point, as are, alarmingly enough, Megadeth. Still, considering the hoarse cries of 'this is our sound, fuck you' that cleave through the middle of this record, it's probably best not to argue.
